Maxine Elizabeth Maguire

Maxine passed away on November 4, 2010 at her home in Auburn, California. Maxine was born October 2, 1918, the first child of Minnie Toney Heard and George Kennon Heard. She was raised in the small farming community of Lake City, California, in Modoc County. She attended Soldier Creek School, Cedarville High School, and Chico State College, where she received her teacher’s credential. She married Thomas Francis Maguire, of San Francisco, with whom she shared a long and loving life.

In her 30-year teaching career, she taught elementary school in Live Oak, Cedarville, Loomis, Citrus Heights and Auburn, CA. Upon retirement, she was active as a community volunteer at the St. Joseph’s Thrift Store, the Auburn Volunteer Bureau, and the Friday Noon program at the Auburn Public Library. Maxine was a member of the St. Joseph’s Parish, the American Association of University Women, the Friends of the Auburn Library and the California Retired Teachers’ Association. A lifelong seamstress, she was a charter member of the Foothill Quilters Guild and the Loose Threads Quilt Group. Maxine loved to garden, sew, read, bake and travel. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother, Garth Kennon Heard, and her husband Thomas Francis Maguire. She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Elizabeth Nelson (Keith Nelson) of Elk Grove, CA and Mary Jane Maguire-Fong (Edward Fong) of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren Kristin Nelson Sletten (Brian Sletten) of Beverly Hills, CA, Ryan Maguire-Fong of Sacramento, CA, and Mariah Maguire-Fong of New York, NY. In addition to her immediate family, she was loved and admired by her many nieces and nephews, and friends.

Friends and family are welcome for visitation on Thursday, November 11 from 4-6 p.m., followed by the Rosary, at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 12 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1162 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA, followed by interment at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 7101 Verner Ave., Sacramento, CA 95841.
