He was my Daddy. Did I really know Daddy or just adore him? These are my “facts” about Philip R. Hewitt: Daddy was born in Pittsburgh PA on July 22, 1924 to Mary Rose (Mayme) Meenihan of Sharon PA. He was raised in Youngstown OH by Mayme and her husband Richard Ernst Hewitt from Yorkshire England.
Philip was a brilliant boy (Mom said he was a genius) and attended St. Columba Catholic School where the nuns would ask him to tell stories to the class while they did other work. He graduated from Rayen High School in Youngstown.
In WWII Philip was in the 101st Airborne and later in Military Intelligence (where he had many interesting experiences he could NOT talk about … Shh).
After his return, Philip married Edna May Kennedy, and in 1950 they had a daughter, Anna Loretta Hewitt. He earned a Baccalaureate Degree in Psychology at Youngstown College (now YSU), and he earned a Masters at Westminster College in PA.
Philip then served as a Parole Officer for Youngstown OH, where he met his future wife Joan Kennedy (not related to Edna). In 1959 he and Joan moved to CA. In CA he earned a second Masters in Social Work. With Joan he had a large family of step/blood children known to me as Billy, Kathy, Dave, Jerry, KC (Karen Charlotte), Johnny, Ricky, Phil, and Mike. They gave him a big wonderful group of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom Philip loved dearly.
Philip was the Workfare Project (developer and) Coordinator for Los Angeles County, where he worked over 20 years until his retirement. He has lived in Hollywood, Simi Valley, Seal Beach, Tahoe City, Folsom, Lincoln, and Auburn.
Philip loved driving to new and familiar places, meeting his friends at wine club, going shopping at the discount stores, finding bargains everywhere, and just being a happy social person. For Daddy, Family came first. Friends were second. Philip R Hewitt was third. His family has lost their rock, their anchor, their gathering point. We all love him and will miss him greatly.
