George was born on September 10, 1946, in Alpena, Michigan, to Lyle and Eleanor Van Wormer. He graduated from Alpena Catholic Central in 1964. George and his beloved wife, Marilyn, raised their family in Alpena before relocating to Auburn Hills in 1991 for George’s work.
George was hardworking, strong-willed, and resilient. Throughout his life, he overcame several major health setbacks, meeting each one with toughness and determination. He enjoyed Westerns, fishing, a comfortable recliner, and time spent with family.
In his later years, George lived with dementia and was cared for at MediLodge Shoreline in Sterling Heights. His family is grateful for the care provided, as well as the friendships he formed with staff and residents during his time there.
George is survived by his sons, Scott Van Wormer and Ryan Van Wormer (Samantha); his grandchildren, Alexis Lucido (Samuel) and Connor Van Wormer; his brothers, James Van Wormer (Linda) and Lyle Van Wormer (Lily); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his son, Reed Van Wormer; and his sister, Rose Kern, and her husband, James.
George will be cremated and privately interred at Christian Memorial Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with Marilyn. A private service for immediate family will be held at the time of interment.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Avondale High School Athletic Department Boosters in George’s honor.
