Born on August 17, 1947, in Detroit, Joanne was one of four children of Tilden M. and Pearl M. (née Chabot) Gallagher. Her life was shaped early by a deep love of learning, a sharp scientific mind, and a warm, generous spirit. On June 3, 1970, she married the love of her life, John Blahnik, at Assumption Grotto Catholic Church in Detroit—a partnership marked by devotion, humor, and a shared affection for the many cats they welcomed into their home over the years.
Joanne was a proud graduate of Dominican High School in Detroit. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan and later achieved two Master’s Degrees from Wayne State University. Her professional life reflected her passion for science and service. She began her career as a Cancer Research Technician before becoming a pharmacist, serving communities across Metro Detroit with care and expertise. She also spent several years teaching high school students in St. Clair Shores, sharing her knowledge and curiosity with the next generation.
Outside of work, Joanne found joy in the simple, meaningful pleasures of life. She loved reading, gardening, crocheting, solving puzzles, and caring for her beloved cats. Friends and family will fondly remember her for her exceptional baking—especially her zucchini bread and her famously perfect mashed potatoes. In retirement, Joanne remained intellectually engaged, taking pride in staying current with developments in the pharmaceutical field and maintaining her professional certifications.
Joanne is survived by many nieces and nephews across the United States, all of whom carry cherished memories of her kindness, wit, and unwavering support. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her brothers Tilden, Thomas, and Michael Gallagher; and her parents, Tilden M. and Pearl M. Gallagher.
In keeping with Joanne’s wishes, the family will hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, honoring her lifelong commitment to learning, compassion, and care.
