LEWISTON --- Glenn H. Nutting passed away peacefully and surrounded by love with related issues to Parkinson's after a week of entertaining fellow residents with the sounds of his piano playing at the Woodlands in Lewiston.
Glenn was born in Newton, MA August 20th 1938 to Archie and Hester Nutting (Hayward). He grew up in the four square mile town of Watertown where everyone knew his name and the First Baptist Church became his second family.
Glenn followed in the family business in Watertown at the early age of 7 painting houses, apartments, and miscellaneous handy work around town with his father. He graduated in 1956 from Watertown High School and attended Wentworth College but remained working with his father. In 1962 Glenn married the love of his life, Janice M. Mennealy, in the First Baptist Church in Watertown where they met. Their loving marriage spanned 59 years, two states, and three children. Glenn made a lasting impression everywhere he went. He cherished his years in Watertown and the lifelong friends and community he built around his young family.
In 1977 a family eye disease, Corneal Lattice Dystrophy, impaired his sight to the point he could no longer drive. But as fate would have it, the Maine Motel and Cabins with its 1950's charm and close proximity to family in Maine was listed for sale and Glenn and Jan moved their family to Maine for a new adventure. Owning and operating a small, boutique, motel had its challenges but before long and with a few coats of red and green paint the Maine Motel and Cabins became a haven for the local race track crowd, Bates College parents, and many travelers from around the globe many who returned year after year. Soon guests became family and upon arrival and a quick story Glenn was out washing their cars. His property was always tidy and he loved seeing sparkling cars lined up among the tall pine trees. Neighbors became family too and new Maine friends quickly became anchors of his beloved community.
Everyone knew Glenn always had a quick story, a joke, or a bouquet of cut flowers from his garden to share and they often stopped in promptly at 10am for mid-morning coffee break. Glenn lived by the clock, so best not to be late. He retired in 2000 but remained in the neighborhood where he knew everyone and subsequently bought the house across the street. Glenn loved music and playing his Baldwin piano often entertaining everyone with hymns, old standards and his favorite “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin. One of his last best days was a gifted house concert with local musician Phil House.
He will be remembered and greatly missed by his children, David Nutting and wife Laurie of Oxford, Meredith Janosco and husband Steve of Greene, and Wendy Nutting and partner Clyde Prince of Sabattus. Glenn was also deeply loved by his grandchildren who brought so much joy to his life. They include Kimberly Moore and husband Jake, Kyla Nutting, Matt Janosco and wife Megan, Megan Richardson and husband Zack. In addition, he also adored his four great grandchildren Gavin, Addie, Easton, and Mason, with his fifth on the way. Also surviving are his nephew Brian Bubar and niece MartiePolleys and their respective families.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Barbara Bubar of North Carolina, and his beloved Samoyed, “Sammy”.
