Growing up on a 30 acre farm in Collins, New York, Melvin took part in 4H Club as a child and started his own lawn mowing business at 10 years old. He continued to work at various farms until 1961 when he entered the US Army. Later, Melvin welcomed two children, Paula, and Michael, their births were two of his happiest moments.
Family time was most important to Melvin, however he stayed active in serving his community as Commander of the VFW and with hospice. He not only was a visitor and greeter, but also brought a smile to those around him by dressing up as a clown. He also graduated from EMT training, and earned many achievements throughout his career in sales including producer of the year and salesman of the year.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Barbara Story; children, Michael (Ginger) Story, and Paula (James) Knoop; step-daughters Lori (Jack) Clark, and Victoria Stambone; siblings Bettie Carazzi and Jack Story; as well as his grandchildren, Collin Story, Caleb Story, Claire Story, Andrew Hooper Jr., Robert Hooper, Zachary Hooper, James Knoop Jr., Jordan Knoop, and Jeffery Knoop.
