

passed away on April 21, 2012. He will be deeply missed by
many friends who loved him for his gentle manner, his kindness, his keen intelligence, and his sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne (Susie) Simowitz
Saul; three children Bruce Saul (wife Debra), David Saul, and
Lisa Saul; four grandchildren Michael Saul, Jonathan Saul,
Sterling Pickett, and Ivy Francis; and his brother Louis Saul (wife Elaine). He was preceded in death by a sister Maxine Saul Goldberg).
Jerry was born in Augusta,Ga. on Oct 9, 1931, to Kalmon
Saul and Hannah Barnett Saul. He attended Houghton Grammar
School, Richmond Academy,Augusta Junior College and
graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia Business
School. After receiving his accounting degree in 1952, he joined his father in business at Star Luggage Shops in downtown Augusta and Daniel Village and continued to expand the business upon his father's retirement. Jerry also owned and operated Frisco Fashions and The Army Navy Store on Broad
Street.
In 1973, Jerry joined the Richmond County Board of
Assessors and was elected as the Richmond County Tax
Commissioner in 1976. In his 35 years of public service, a small fragment of his accomplishments included improving the
services of the tax office by updating all information on a
computer database, opening branch offices, eliminating long tag lines, and establishing a Taxmobile.
Jerry loved sports and was a talented athlete. As a young
man, he was a captain and coach of the YMHA softball team,
captain for the Augusta College Basketball team, and captain of The Star Luggage bowling team. He loved to play golf and once made a hole-in-one on the 7th hole at the par three at the Augusta National. He was a President of the Forest Hills Golf Club and a member of the “Irish Mafia” Golf Club. Jerry was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and attended Georgia football games for 50 years.
Jerry participated in many service organizations, including
Sertoma, the West Augusta Rotary Club, and the downtown
Rotary Club. He was on the board of the USO. He was
recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. He
was a member of Adas Yeshurun Synagogue and the
Congregation Children of Israel.
After retiring in 2008, Jerry enjoyed traveling with his wife
Susie, playing bridge at Brandon Wilde and the Augusta Bridge
Center, and caring for his many dogs and cats. In lieu of
