“LOVING A MARINE”
Loving a Marine isn’t always what they say
For with it, there is a price one must pay.
It’s mostly loving but not to hold,
It’s being young and feeling old.
It’s sending a letter with an upside-down stamp,
To a far away lover in a far away camp.
Being in love will merely your dreams,
Being thoughts of Heaven, when love light gleams.
You wish it was possible for him to phone,
You want him to say, “I’m on my way home.”
And when he comes, you’re laughing together,
Unconscious of people, of time and of weather.
It’s having him whisper his love for you,
It’s whispering back that you love him too.
Then comes a kiss, a promise of love,
Knowing you are watched by God up above.
Reluctantly, painfully, letting him go,
While you’re crying inside wanting him so.
Days go by, no mail for a spell,
You wait for a word that he is well,
And when the letter comes, you’re filled with joy,
And act like a child with a new shiny toy.
It’s loving a Marine, the one you adore,
And hating yourself, the world and the war.
And it’s going to church to kneel and pray,
And really meaning the things that you say.
And though you know he is far away,
You love him more and more each day.
Having a Marine is bitterness and tears,
It’s loneliness, sadness and unfound fears,
No; loving a Marine is really fun,
But it’s worth the price when his time is won…...
(Poem written by Lorraine Morrill to Ed Morrill, during one of his overseas deployment, based on “Loving a Marine”)
