Born March 26, 1950, Hameln Germany
Died March 14, 2018, Toronto, ON
Beloved son of Alexander and Ursula (nee von Mengersen) von Vietinghoff, sister Margarete Carr (Douglas), nephews/niece Michael, Andrew, David (Dawn), Lesley Gibbons (Russell), Peter (Jessica) Carr, and many cousins and grand-nieces and nephews.
Andrew and his parents immigrated to Canada in 1952.
Andy grew up primarily in Guelph and Toronto but also spent several years in Long Beach California in between.
He was educated at University of Toronto, York U. and finally found his niche in Food Science and graduated from Guelph University with a BSc.
During his younger years he was a rebel and a hippie. He was the editor of various school and university newspapers, mostly underground. He had long hair, marched in protests in the 60’s and played in a rock band. He was very cool.
For most of his working career he worked at a food manufacturing company in Mississauga, Kingsway Chocolate as the plant manager.
He had a keen intellect and strong work ethic. He was widely read, had many interests and hobbies and loved to travel. He was a loyal and generous son, brother, uncle and great friend.
Far too young he contracted MS. The illness took its toll. However he bore his new limitations without complaint or self-pity, focussing on what he could do, not what he couldn’t.
Sadly, if that wasn’t enough of a burden to bear he recently received the terrible diagnosis of terminal cancer to which be succumbed far sooner than expected. Still he never complained and remained upbeat until the end.
His courage was an inspiration and he will be greatly missed.
May he finally be pain-free and find peace.
In lieu of flowers he would be pleased if you could make a donation to the MS Society or the charity of your choice.
