Passed peacefully on September 11, 2023 at Southlake Hospital, Newmarket at the age of 91 years. He was the devoted and beloved husband of Maria for 67 years. Loving father of Maria Canito (Fernando), Isaias (Kathy) and Cesar (Sharon). Dearest Grandpa to his grandchildren, Shawn Canito (Melinda), Stephanie Dobson (Daniel), Julia Teves (Ben), Allison Teves (Alex) and Catriona Teves (Noah) and great grandchildren, Henry, Julian, Kaleb and Myles.
Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, a young Duarte married Maria in 1955 and immigrated to Canada alone in 1956 searching for a better life. Somewhat disenchanted, he returned to Portugal and continued his life with Maria and his first child, daughter Maria. His sons, Isaias and Cesar, were born during this time in the Azores. In 1964, Duarte, determined to make a fresh start, returned to Canada. In 1966, he was joined by his family and settled in Nakina, a small town in a remote area of Northern Ontario. They remained there for 10 years and finally settled in Barrie, ON for the next 40 years. Duarte worked hard at various jobs, but spent most of his career at CNR becoming a Track Supervisor before retiring. He loved working in his garden producing a variety of luscious vegetables. Duarte will be deeply missed by extended family and friends.
