Dear Doris,
We were deeply saddened by the passing of Eldon. I was recently going through an old diary of our time in Blind River in 1957. Eldon was one of my coach officers at that time, and I had the utmost respect for him then, as I still have today. Please accept our sincere condolences to you and your family.

I had the privilege of working with Det. Inspector Bell as I knew him then some 30 years ago at 90 Harbour St. It was such a pleasure seeing his face in the office. He always made me smile and laugh. He was always a gentleman and truly one of the best. I am truly sorry for your loss as he will surely be missed. He was a gentle and kind man.

I have no words to describe the sadness in my heart. Linda is closer than a sister to me and the Bell household has always been my second family. From the age of 6 onward, I stopped every day to grab Linda for the short walk to school. If Eldie was sitting at the kitchen table, he always had a humorous comment ready to toss out and our bantering continued throughout the years whenever I visited or phoned. I will always treasure the fact that Doris and Eldon took the time and effort to make the trek to Aruba for my wedding, as did Linda and Steve, of course. 

I told someone recently that Linda and I are the owners of each other’s memories. We have always shared in each of our life’s joys and sadness. I share in your sadness now.

Dear Doris and family, although my wife Jan and I never had the privilege of meeting Eldon personally, yet as very good friends of Kim Butcher we feel that we know you as we have been thinking and praying for you for a long time now.  Although we are in church ministry now, yet I (Ross) was with the Toronto Police Service for many years and so you can see we really are part of your "family."  Please be assured of our continued love and prayers for the days and weeks that lay ahead.  Perhaps through Kim we may have the privilege of meeting you one day. I remember when I first met your Dad when we were in grade school .... he was "Mr. Bell" then, a big and scary police officer.    Of course, as I got to know him I realized he was often pulling my leg and once we were young adults, it was simply Eldon or more affectionately, Eldie.  We would have such a laugh at your place with your Dad always making jokes (and pouring drinks).
I know the next few days and months will be tough.   However, you were fortunate to have such a loving Dad!    Lean on your family and friends now to pull you through and know that your Dad now rests in the arms of the Lord.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dear husband, Eldon.  I worked at General Headquarters of the Ontario Provincial Police and met Eldon when he was an Inspector in the Criminal Investigation Branch. 

 We worked together on many criminal investigations.  I was in the Forensic Identification Branch searching and photographing evidence that could be used in court trials.  Eldon was a great man, bright and friendly, his smile would light up any room.  His sense of humour would make all of us laugh and forget all our troubles. 

 In closing I would like to say that Eldon was a role model for all of us.  He was kind, considerate, friendly, and just a wonderful human being.  I mourn his loss and I shall never forget him.  Please extend my sympathy to all of the members of your family.  Thank you.

It is with sadness that I have learned of the passing of Eldon.  Over the course of many years as a colleague and a friend of Eldon, I was blessed with his aquaintance, his friendship, his pleasant sense of humour and his professionalism.
