September 3, 1921 - March 17, 2015
We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Florence (“Flo”) Harris, aged 93, on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, after a prolonged hospital stay. Flo leaves behind her beloved children, Ruthanne (“Frann”), Stephen and Cynthia (“Cindy”), and her much loved granddaughter Amanda, and their spouses. Flo was predeceased by her parents George and Helena Gillies (née Paul) and her brother Donald Garfield Gillies.
Born on Cumberland Avenue in historic Yorkville, Flo was a lover of art and nature. During her lengthy career, her two favorite assignments were as an education assistant for TDSB and as a docent for the Thomson Gallery, formerly located at The Bay in downtown Toronto. She worked tirelessly throughout her life at paid and volunteer assignments, but it was her role as our mother that gave her the most happiness and filled her with pride. She was generous and witty, with a keen sense of humour. She was a proud and fierce Canadian, who was interested in national events, politics, baseball and hockey (except for the violence).
In keeping with Flo’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Cremation has already taken place. At a later date, her ashes will be interred at the Gillies’s family plot at Park Lawn Cemetery in a private family ceremony. Donations may be made in Flo’s name to The Salvation Army or the Toronto Humane Society. To make a donation or express condolences, please visit: www.thompsonfh-aurora.com
