Frank was the beloved husband of Patricia for 54 years, much-loved father to Catherine, Patricia (Richard) and Craig (Julia) and the world’s best Papa to Isabel and Lauren. Frank will be sadly missed by his sisters Betty (George) Woods and Heather (Cyril predeceased) Collicott, brother-in law Ted Francis, sister-in-law Diane Cooper, and fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Frank was born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia to the late Frank and Catherine MacLean. He is a direct descendant of Wellwood Waugh, one of the original settlers in the Tatamagouche area. Work took him to Ontario, but he always looked forward to returning each summer and fall to his beloved hometown.
He began his career with Environment Canada in 1967 as part of the Canadian Ice Patrol where he shared many adventures with colleagues who became lifelong friends. Before retiring, he worked as Environment Canada’s Port Meteorological Officer in Toronto, Ontario and later at the Centre for Atmospheric Research in Egbert, Ontario.
Much like his parents, Frank was very community minded; from coaching little league baseball and hockey teams to volunteering at the Aurora Community Garden where he donated his annual crop of vegetables to the local food bank. Frank was proud of his Scottish heritage and was the Chairman of the Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada (CASSOC) from 1998 – 2003 and a member of the Clan MacLean Atlantic Canada.
Frank was a dedicated Mason having served as Past Master and most recently as Secretary of Robertson Lodge, A.F & A.M. No. 292 in Aurora. He was recently honoured at the 150th Anniversary of the Robertson Lodge for his hard work and insight in reviving and expanding the Lodge’s membership.
Frank was a true lover of the outdoors and could often be found gardening, sailing, chopping wood, skiing, or tapping his backyard trees for maple syrup. Most conversations started with a comment about the weather, and he always had interesting stories to share. Frank never forgot his humble beginnings and always said his greatest accomplishment was his family and his greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters.
He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, Masonic Brethren, Ice Patrol buddies, members of the Clan MacLean Atlantic Canada and all whose lives he touched.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the Memorial and Masonic Service at 1:30 p.m. to take place at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Pkwy S. Aurora, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Aurora Food Pantry, or charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
“And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark...” (Lord Tennyson)
