Thank you to all who have left a message in the guestbook.  It means so much to myself and the family.  My brother and I cannot be there during this time, however we have taken the time to write a letter that we would like to share. 

GRANDMA GRACE : OCTOBER 24, 1929 – SEPTEMBER 9, 2013

It is with heavy hearts that we take the time to thank all of the friends and family that are joining us, as we remember Grace Mulholland, and the memories she has graciously shared with each and every one of us.   

As children, we remember the immediate joy that overcame us when we were told we were going to visit Grandma.  The house on Davis was a second home to us.  Rolling down the hill in the backyard, helping Grandma prune her beloved roses, playing in the creek (and crossing the creek even when we weren't suppose to), tobogganing down the backyard hill on whatever we could find, the BBQs, the weekly Sunday dinners (no one cooks a meaner roast beef dinner than Gracie, sorry Mom), and always checking the milk box even though a milk man hadn't been there in years.  Most of all, we remember not being able to get past the front door without a hug and a kiss.  

As we grew older it became less acceptable to play “monkeys on the bed” and jump until we broke the frame, to eat moth balls from dresser drawers that we thought were leftovers from our Easter egg hunts, to play hide and seek in the backroom in the basement (we stopped fitting in our classic hiding spots – behind the water tank and on the shelves), and as the family grew bigger, we started to believe we'd never be upgraded from the kids table at family dinners.  However, we still were not able to get past the front door without a hug and a kiss – no matter how big we got.

As we grew into adulthood we began to value our relationship with Grandma on a different level.  It became less about what kind of cookies she made for us, and more about walking into her house and smelling those familiar smells that reminded us of the little things we valued as children.  The smell of roses, the smell of a roast in the oven, the smell of peanut butter cookies cooking, her house at Christmas, the scent her clothes always had.  We started to be grateful for the memories.  We focused on continuing to create new ones; we learned to cherish the moments.

When Grandma started to become ill, early in her diagnosis, we didn't think twice about helping to look after her, or to care for her.  It was our turn to give that same love and affection to her that she had given to us.  She now needed us, just as we needed her so many years before.  It became up to us to make sure we never walked past the front door without giving her a hug and a kiss.

In 2011, Grandama was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  Nothing could have prepared us for what that actually meant for Grandma, nor our family.  We walked beside her on her journey.  We saw the ups, the downs and the daily struggles.  As she began to lose touch with what we saw as reality, it became a foggy memory for her.  We were there when she started to lose face recognition, began experiencing time lapses, and when past memories of children, and inevitably the love of her life, John, were no longer a thing of the past, but instead present time for her.  We learned about the toll of the disease first hand as we accompanied Grace through it – every step of the way.  More importantly though, we learned how strong our family is.  We came together, children and grandchildren, to ensure that we were all there to support, not only Grace, but each other as well.  Relationships grew stronger as this was a time we all needed to have someone to hold us up and tell each other it was all going to be okay.

Our grandma held many roles in her 84 years.  Grace was a loving wife, mother and grandmother; a compassionate sister, niece, aunt and cousin; a caring friend and bowling companion; our favourite babysitter (anything goes at Grandma's house) and now, she is our guardian angel. She will watch over all of us now, just as she had done all her years before.   

We will honour Grandma Grace and hold dear to the memories as her spirit lives on in all of our hearts.  We will always love and remember Grandma Grace for the beautiful woman she is, inside and out – heart, body and soul.

Sleep easy, Gracie.  Spend some time with your love.  Grandpa will be there to make sure you don't get past the front door without a hug and a kiss.  Please help us heal, and take care of us while we travel through the next few hours, days, weeks, months and years without you here.  You will be missed, my angel.  This is not goodbye, it's see you later.  

Love always and forever, to the moon and back.
