Beloved husband of 58 years to the love of his life Dawn P Mitchell, loving father of Cynthia D Mitchell of Aurora, Ontario, Graham P Mitchell and wife Caroline of Pembroke, MA; dear grandfather of Tamara and Vincent, brother to Ruth Walker of Chatham, Ontario and Christine Havelock of Waltham, MA, and uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews.
Graham was born in Cochrane, Ontario in 1920, and graduated from Malvern High School in Toronto, trained at Royal Rhodes Victoria BC and served in WWII, as a secondary lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1942-1945, escorting protection for the convoys to Europe, returning to graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1949. He worked for ERCO Chemical seeing much of Canada from coast to coast as National Sales Manager, falling in love with Dawn Pirie at Lac Ouimet Lodge PQ, marrying in Grand Falls NB and choosing to start their family life in Vancouver BC as ERCO’s Regional Manager. Moving back east in 1963, Graham settled the family in the Forest Hill area, and after several promotions completed the Canadian Securities course and moved into a financial career with Baker Weeks and Watt Carmichael as an investment advisor. Post retirement, Graham satisfied his entrepreneurial passion with his former ERCO colleagues by founding BCM, a chlorate production start-up and energy plant, before retiring for good in 1990.
Graham loved his sports, enjoyed squash and skiing in winters and tennis in summers well into his 80’s. He was an active member of the B&R, Granite Club, and Craigleith Ski Club where he enjoyed many activities with family and friends. Graham and Dawn moved to their dream home in the Glenorchy area of Don Mills in the early 70’s, where he enjoyed gardening, his dogs, and trying to find time for golf. They moved to Beacon Hall in Aurora, in 1990, to fulfill his passion for golf and spend more time with friends and family.
Donations in Graham’s name may be made to the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, where he received great care. A private family funeral service to take place. There will be a 'Celebration of Life’ for Graham in September, friends and family welcome. Online condolences at www.thompsonfh-aurora.com
