Joseph Downey

DOWNEY, Joseph Marshall. Longtime employee of the T. Eaton Company Ltd.

Passed away on January 21, 2019 at the Southlake Regional Health Centre in his 90th year.

Predeceased by his wife of 64 years Catherine (Kae), his parents Bernice and Marshall and his sisters Marybelle and Roseanne. Loving father of Michael (Madeleine), Patti (Bob Harrison), James (Susan), Teri (Gary Gerus) and Kelly (Giuseppe Mondino). Cherished Poppa Joe of Marty, Bobby, Marlena, Sarah, Jessica, Pietro, Jaymee, Michael and great grandfather of Kaelynn, Oliver and Livia. Dear brother of Donald and brother in law of Tom Beyers, Margaret Downey and Audrey Donegan.

Joe will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. Skiing well into his 70s, Joe enjoyed the slopes in Canada and Europe with Michael in addition to travelling with Kae to Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Great Britain, Europe, across Canada and the whole family on vacations to Florida and Balsam Lake. Always tinkering around his beloved home on Preston Lake, where he served as Road Commissioner, Joe could always be counted on to help a family member by finding or fabricating an item, however unusual.

Visitation will be held at the Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, 905-727-5421 on January 25 from 6 to 9. A memorial service will take place on January 26 at 3 in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated. On-line condolences may be left at

We always enjoyed Uncle Joe and Aunt Kae. They were the best story tellers and we would be howling at their tales. The world is less without them. Xoxo

Our sincerest condolences.

Joe was a wonderful brother for almost 90 years. He was well liked by everyone who knew him. He was a lot of fun to be around. We have great memories of skiing and golfing together in the later years. He will be truly missed.

Lovingly, Don, Marg & Pam

Hello Downey Family,

My sincere condolences for your loss.

I have fond memories of Poppa Joe. When I was young he always seemed to be building something for me, whether it was my bed with Star Wars wallpaper or the great astronomical display for school that helped kids learn about our planets.

My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Love Michael

Jim, Robert and family,

We are very saddened by your loss. Some of us were lucky enough to know your Dad personally. The rest of us knew him through the wonderful memories you shared with us over the years. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Tom and Jo shared a bottle of wine this afternoon and toasted (Uncle) Joe. Tom knew Joe for over 70 years and had many a story to regal. Joe's wit, good looks and humanity lives on in his kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
Who will be bringing the pink lemonade thermos to the next Downey reunion? A traditional needs to continue.
We will be with you all virtually as you celebrate Joe's life, later this week.
Big hugs to everyone,
Tom, Jo, Ted, Randy, Helen, Kids
