Mother of three sons, grandmother to nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Maxine will be remembered for her sharp wit, tasteful style and independent spirit. A perfectionist in an imperfect world, she brought grace and intention to everything she touched.
Predeceased by her husband Douglas Nisbet (1982) and oldest son Craig (2018), her memory will live on through her three boys' families: Craig's wife Sharon and their daughters Lauren (Alex Paterson) and Elizabeth (Tyler Sandhaus); David (Shawn) and children Nathan (Stephanie), McKenzie (Joel Oliver), Morgan and Nolan; Michael (Victoria) and their sons Douglas (Emma), Owen (McKenzie) and Justin. Maxine also lived to see the arrival of the next generation, happily welcoming great-grandchildren Charlotte, William, Connor, and James.
With roots in Aurora, Ontario dating back to the early 1930s, Maxine was the youngest child of HM McKenzie and Maud Porter, predeceased by her older siblings Harvey, Dorothy, Margaret, Gordon, Pauline and Craig. In 1948 she married Doug Nisbet at the Aurora Trinity Anglican Church and the two remained in Aurora, contributing to the legacy of the family businesses, the Aurora Greenhouse and Aurora Highlands Golf Club, and later Westview Golf Club, which remains a family-run business today.
Maxine had a keen sense for design and beauty, enjoying her time as an interior decorator and staging displays for the flower shop. She loved collecting antiques and surrounding herself with meaningful pieces. Her keen eye for beauty and timeless style was evident in every corner of her home, high on the hill overlooking Aurora and Westview, where she lived independently until the end of her 99 years.
A lifelong golf enthusiast, she was a club champion at an early age and followed Canadian golfer Brooke Henderson’s tournaments with enthusiasm. She was also an avid reader, beginning each day by studying the Toronto Star cover to cover.
She remained closely connected to her family, including her many nieces and nephews, and could always be depended upon to keep everyone informed and in touch.
The family would like to share a special thank you to her PSW helper Teresa and the caring staff at Margaret Bahen. Their kindness will not soon be forgotten.
Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Maxine's memory may be made to Margaret Bahen Hospice, Newmarket, Ontario, myhospice.ca/donate/
