Nellie Kaoru Sugiura passed away peacefully in her 95th year at home in Aurora, Ontario, on August 1, 2026. Born February 13, 1931, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Nellie was the third of eight siblings born to Sampei and Tsune Sugiura.
Some of Nellie’s childhood years were spent in an internment camp in Kaslo, B.C. during the war. She often shared memories of the adventures she and her siblings found there—moments of light and closeness that endured, even alongside the hardships their parents faced.
As a young woman, Nellie began her nursing career in Alberta. She later moved to Ontario, where she worked for several years in both a hospital and a doctor’s office, and ultimately concluded her career as a registered nurse at Bendale Acres long-term retirement home in Scarborough. Through a life shaped by steady purpose and care for others, Nellie’s work reflected a quiet dedication and a deep respect for the dignity of those she served.
Nellie is survived by her children Tobin (Hutoxi) and Jodi (Jean-Marc); three siblings, Lucy (Robert), Evelyn (Arny), and Jessie (Chris, deceased); six grandchildren Meaghan (Jason), Ariana, Anyta, Ryan (Maria) Andrew, Justin; and great-grandson, Carter. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, and she will live through them forever.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents and four beloved siblings, Harold, Yoi, Patrick, and Jacqueline.
As per her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral ceremonies, just a small private family gathering to celebrate her life.
