Raúl’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, hard work, and the transformative power of education. Born into rural poverty in San Agustin, El Salvador, in 1946, his path changed forever when he began working as a ball boy at a local tennis club. His talent on the court earned him national titles and a full athletic scholarship to Oregon State University, where he overcame significant barriers to graduate with an engineering degree. He remains a celebrated athlete in his homeland, having held the title of El Salvador National Tennis Champion for many years and winning the Central American Championship in 1973.
Professionally, Raúl worked as a brew master in San Salvador in the 1970s before managing a large coastal shrimp plant. However, amidst the escalating violence of the Salvadoran civil war, he made the courageous decision to emigrate to Canada with his beloved wife, Guadalupe, and their three children in 1988. Starting over from scratch in a new country, he rebuilt his career, eventually running his own seafood inspection business.
Canada was Raúl’s cherished home for nearly four decades. He loved playing tennis and poker with his friends and family, sharing joyful moments with his neighbors and Rotary colleagues, and visiting relatives in El Salvador and Europe. Possessing a deep connection with nature, he found immense peace in raising birds and fishing.
Having survived extreme poverty, a civil war, and a grim pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2021, Raúl’s enduring legacy is defined by his dedication to his family and his unwavering refusal to give up. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Guadalupe; his children, José, Lya, and Raul Jr.; and his six beloved grandchildren, Bianca, Mateo, Diego, Gloria, Valentina, and Oscar.
