During his long medical career Richard held major leadership and academic appointments at two of Canada's top medical institutions. He served at McGill University as the Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and was simultaneously the Head of the Clinical Pharmacology Unit at the Montreal General Hospital. During his tenure, he was highly recognized for his research. His research into cardiovascular pharmacology and hypertension helped shape modern clinical practices and earned him international recognition. He later transitioned to the University of Toronto, where he became a Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology (now Professor Emeritus). At the same time he held the post as a Clinical Pharmacologist and Director within the Divisions of Cardiology and the Hypertension Unit, specializing in advanced hypertension management at Toronto Western Hospital. His expertise extended well past Canadian borders, particularly through his involvement with the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR). He served as the Chairman of this organisation for several years. In this role, he was a vocal advocate for the rational use of drugs globally and focused heavily on building subcommittees to foster clinical pharmacology education and infrastructure in developing countries. He published over 240 academic publications, chapters, and papers.
Richard was a passionate educator. He was known for his sharp wit, his lucid writing style, and his ability to simplify complex medical concepts for his students.
To those who knew him personally, Richard was more than a doctor; he was a man of deep curiosity and gentle kindness. He was an avid reader, a lover of history, and a dedicated family man. His colleagues remember him as a "clinician’s clinician"—someone who balanced the rigors of science with a profound empathy for the human condition. He lived his life with the same dignity and precision he brought to his practice.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation and thanks to Dr. Gary Tran and the wonderful caregivers from cbiHEALTH and HosPall.
An event to celebrate Richard’s life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to Covenant House Toronto.
