Alice L. Neal was born on January 1, 1927 at home in Bastrop County to James Homer Neal and Nora A. Byrd. Alice passed away at home with her daughter and son-in-law by her side on June 12, 2015 at the age of 88.
Alice worked in retail for numerous years before beginning her 35 years employment with Austin New Agency which later became Anderson News and retired at the age of 79.
Alice was a little woman with a big heart and will be greatly missed by all. She loved to bake and made family, friends and co-workers birthday cakes every year. Everyone loved to receive gifts of her delicious cookies at Christmas time. One of her hobbies was collecting cookbooks. She would sit and read a cookbook in the evenings as other people would sit and read a storybook. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and was known as the ‘Christmas Lady’ in the neighborhood because of all her lights and decoration she put up at Christmas time. She also decorated her yard for Halloween and Easter.
Alice loved to shop and always was dressed nice and loved to wear pretty jewelry. She would dress nicer to the mow the lawn than some dress for work. If she found something on sale which she liked and it wouldn’t fit her she would buy it anyway and give it to someone who she knew it would fit. When out in public people would always compliment her on how nice she looked and how cute she was.
Alice will be remember as wonderful mother, nanny, sister, wife, great friend and a truly loving and giving person to all who knew her. She was Nanny to the grandkids and others in the extended family and she was Pee Wee to her brothers and sisters.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Adam C. Walters, grandson Shaun Nelson Sharpe, daughter Dorothy J. Rodriguez, brothers Lee and Leroy Neal, sisters Jewel Hardom and Dorothy Jones.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories: her children, Sammy Don Thigpen, of Kerrville; Betty Ann Sharpe (husband Nelson) of Austin; Charles M. Walters (wife Cindy) of Chandler; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Buchanan of Hutto. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sammy Buchanan (wife Kelly) of Hutto; Suzy Buchanan of Hutto; Tracy Kemp (husband Jamie) of Cleburne; Melodie Brazle (husband Mark) of Houston; Stacey Leigh (husband, Kenny) of Lewisville; Troy Walters of Irving; and her sisters, Willie Mae Hill and Lula Belle Parks both of Ingram; Ruth Tumlinson of Liberty Hill; sister-in-law Mary Neal of Kerrville; 10 great grandkids and numerous nephews and nieces. She dearly loved her pets, Sugarbaby and Blossom.
We would like to express our deep appreciation to Tammy Page-Chappell for her love and devotion in taking care of our mother. Also would like to thank Standards Hospice for being here her last month.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 18th from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm and services will be Friday, June 19th at 2:00 pm at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery, Pflugerville, Texas.
