Born in Natick, Massachusetts, in the fall of 1959, Andrew was the fourth child of six to Eugene and Irene Verrett. Andrew had several places to call home, including Catonsville, MD; Juneau, AK; Algiers, LA; and Gulfport, MS, before finally settling in his forever home in Austin, TX. The majority of his young adulthood was spent in Gulfport. Their family home on Parkwood Drive was filled with rescue animals, foster children, and potato pancakes. It became the hub for family celebrations for decades.
After graduating from Harrison Central High School, Andrew went on to earn his B.S. in Engineering Technology from Mississippi State University in 1983. During this time Andrew met his future wife, Nancy, through school and work at Wilson’s Service Merchandise. They married on August 16, 1985. Shortly after they bought their first home in Northwood Hills, Andrew began working for the NASA Stennis Space Center as a primary contractor for rocket engine test programs.
It was in 1992 that Andrew began looking for work in Austin. He was fortunate to have the help of close friends as he searched for a good company to support his family. Through hard work and dedication, Andrew secured a job in the radio shop with LCRA, soon advancing to a Senior Technician for the Hydromet Systems and a Senior Control Systems Administrator. Andrew became an integral part of his team and made several contributions to the city of Austin. Using his radio and electronic skills, Andrew assisted with many projects, including the creation of a new data collection platform from scratch. He was also instrumental in the Hydromet expansion project, adding 150+ water gauges to the city network. Andrew's thorough understanding of software and equipment systems helped establish accurate and reliable systems to monitor the Lower Colorado River Basin. After working with LCRA for 31 years, Andrew retired in February 2024 with the utmost respect and admiration for his peers and leaders.
Andrew and Nancy were blessed with two daughters, Angela and Audrey, whom he cared for and loved deeply. His witty humor, patience, level-headedness, and soft-spoken nature helped him in marriage and fatherhood. His gentle demeanor made him the perfect girl dad. He shared his passions for hiking, building computers, repairing cars, gardening, and the stock market—always encouraging his daughters to explore and grow. Andrew spent time teaching the importance of being handy and showed the power of hard work through his many valuable projects. With his frugal nature, knack for technology, and an understanding of how things work, he could fix just about anything.
Andrew showed his vigor and resilience through his battle with stage 4 brain cancer. Diagnosed in September 2023, he had a quiet strength and determination while he pushed to fight and continue living life to the fullest. Andrew traveled abroad, took on new adventures, and started creative projects at home. He loved spending the afternoon reflecting on his day from his patio, beer in hand. This simple pleasure became cathartic during his retirement and as he underwent treatment. He and his family would spend hours on the patio making plans and listening to The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, Three Dog Night, and the Doobie Brothers. While we are heartbroken over all that we didn’t get to do as a family, we are comforted by the quality time we had in our home caring for our Dad.
Andrew is preceded in death by his father, Eugene Gerald Verrett; mother, Irene Ina Verrett; and beloved grandmother, Edna Porche Verrett. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Verrett; daughters, Angela and Audrey Verrett; and his five siblings: David (Linda) Verrett, Denise (Don) Keyser, Stephen (Carolyn) Verrett, Peter (Glenda) Verrett, Julie (Dale) Alphonso-Herzog and many nieces and nephews. His siblings assisted in his battle with Glioblastoma through research, prayer, and visits, along with boundless emotional guidance and support that championed his quality of life.
A celebration of Andrew’s life will be held at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park at 6300 W William Cannon Dr, Austin, TX 78749 on May 10th, 2025 at 11:00am.
