

Arthur Talmadge Canant, Jr., age 88, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2005 in Austin, Texas. Mr. Canant was born November 15, 1916 in Corsicana, Texas. He married Frances Geraldine Tinkle on August 10, 1947 in Corsicana, where he worked at the Corsicana Daily Sun as a reporter and sports editor until 1968. Mr. Canant then moved to Austin and worked in public relations for the Texas Employment Commission until retiring in 1981. He then worked at the Frank Erwin Center through 2003. Mr. Canant attended the University of Texas, served as a Lieutenant in the US Army in World War II in the Pacific Theater, was a Commander of the American Legion Post in Corsicana, member of the Lions Club, a choir member of the First Methodist Church of Austin, a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge, and a loyal member of the Scottish Rite and Ben Hur Shrine Chanters. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gerry Canant; his daughter Rebecca Canant Cates and husband John Cates and two grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Cates and Bryan Hale Cates, and his daughter, Teresa Canant-Finch, and husband Jim Finch, of Round Rock, their children Jennifer and Peter Finch. Survivors also include Totsy and Spencer Elliott of Corsicana, Texas and Phil and Shelley Elliott of Houston. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at Weed-Corley Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8 at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana.
