She was born on March 5, 1924, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Barbara was one year old when her family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she spent her childhood and school years, graduating Shortridge High School. After leaving Indiana and moving to San Antonio, Texas, she met the love of her life, Henry (Hank) P. Rettinger, a Captain in the United States Air Force stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. They fell in love and were married for 70 years until Hanks passing in 2017. A match made in Heaven to be sure. During Hanks 30 years of active duty they were stationed in Germany, Denmark and Japan where Bobbie thoroughly embraced each country and their people as she learned their languages to the best of her ability. Bobbie and Hank had three children, Barbara (Babbs) Mallory of San Antonio, Texas, Henry P. Rettinger of Vancouver, Washington, and Lynn Newby of Austin, Texas. These three children were raised overseas most of their childhood and like their parents, enjoyed embarking on new adventures.
Upon retirement from the Air Force Bobbie and Hank moved to Edinburg, Texas, where Bobbie began working in administration with First National Bank of Edinburg and eventually she founded the only Womens Investment Department.
In 1986 Bobbie and Hank moved to Austin, a city they always enjoyed when Hank had been stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base. It was then they began their great enjoyment of cruising with Hollard America cruise line for many many years. They never tired of meeting new people, seeing new places from Europe to the Caribbean. They formed many lasting friendships with fellow cruisers, often planning to cruise together on future cruises.
Bobbie had the unique ability to always be positive, smile her beautiful smile and never know a stranger. Bobbie is preceded in death by her brother, Col. (Ret) Charles Warne, her husband Col. (Ret) Henry P. Rettinger and her adored granddaughter Heather Marie Newby.
Bobbie is survived by her three children, listed above, 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
