A native of Galveston, Texas, she was born on June 11, 1927, the only child of Walter and Sophie Steinbach Smoke. She graduated from Ball High School in 1944 and was employed by the Santa Fe Railway until 1953, when she joined her husband in the military at Fort Sill, OK.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John J. Schroeder of Lago Vista; two daughters, Cathy Schroeder of San Rafael, CA and Nancy Schroeder of Topsail Beach, NC, brother-in-law Joe Megna and wife Joan of San Antonio, TX and sister-in-law Carol Schroeder of San Antonio, TX, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Betty was a lifetime Episcopalian, having been baptized and confirmed at Grace Episcopal Church in Galveston. She was an active member of Church of the Good Shepherd in St. Louis, MO and is currently a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lago Vista, where she previously served as a member of the Bishop’s Committee.
Following her husband’s discharge from the service, Betty and her family made their home in La Marque and Alvin TX and St. Louis, MO. Upon her husband’s retirement from Monsanto Company, they relocated to Lago Vista in 1987.
Betty’s main concern in life was her family and her church. She was always volunteering in the youth activities of her daughters, and in addition, she was a charter member of the Seton Northwest Hospital Auxiliary.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m,. Tuesday, June 19 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lago Vista.
Graveside services will be conducted at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock, TX at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20.
