Mac Summers was born on July 12, 1928 in Mission, Texas and died on October 8, 2010 in Austin, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda Summers of Austin, son Hal Summers and wife Christi of Fort Worth, son Wayde Edens and wife Geri of Pflugerville, grandson Kruger Summers, niece Lou Caudle and husband Bill and niece Suzanne Bell. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Summers and Harriet (McIntosh) and by his brother and sister-in-law, Joe Summers and wife Melva; and his grandson, Spencer Thomas Edens.
Mac served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in Architecture. He practiced many years in McAllen before moving to Austin where he continued until his retirement from the State of Texas (MHMR). His creativity was evident in all his hands touched from his woodworking to his pen and ink drawings to his beautiful seashell work and his renowned gourmet cooking to name a few. Mac’s great love of flowers led him to grow a perpetual bower of blooms which adorned his home and beloved greenhouse and delighted the lives of his family and many appreciative friends. His most special gift was growing orchids, which blossomed abundantly to the envy of any florist.
Mac’s travels took him to Japan where the art and culture he encountered became a part of his life, expressed in his interest in Asian art prints, sculpture and artifacts of the ancient samurai tradition. He was an avid reader of non-fiction with history being his favorite genre and he was generous in sharing his knowledge with others. There was no better storyteller than Mac. He had perfect timing, a memory for detail and his high humor entertained and delighted family, friends and many dinner guests. He was endeared by anyone who was lucky enough to pass an evening with him.
He is lovingly remembered by his dear wife, Glenda, family, friends and all who knew him. He was a unique, kind and gifted man who lived life with integrity, courage and an unforgettable twinkle in his bright blue eyes. In addition to his many loves and talents, he will also be remembered for all the different hats he wore, his Scottish heritage, his love of the beach, of saltwater fishing, of the red Jeep he loved to drive on the sands of Port Aransas, and his laughter, none greater than that brought on while watching his grandson at play. Mac’s family invites all who knew him to please share their memories of how he touched their lives.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 at Westlake United Methodist Church, 1460 Redbud Trail in Austin. Memorials to the Westlake UMC Permanent Endowment Fund should be sent to: Westlake UMC, 1460 Redbud Trail, Austin, Texas 78746.
