Caroline Garrett Jan. 18, 1922 Dec. 3, 2004 Carolyn (Caroline) Garrett died in the hospital after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. The older of two daughters of Frank Nadine Cooper, Caroline was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1922. As a teenager she met Cyril Garrett, who was to be the love of her life. She eloped at the start of WW II to marry him - then a young serviceman in the United States Army commanding a supply vessel in Adak, Alaska granted a short leave in Seattle, Washington to accommodate his marital plans. After his tour of duty in the Army, Cyril and Caroline moved to Florida where he elected to pursue his studies in religion, graduating from Stetson University and assuming a number of pulpits as a Baptist minister. The lure of additional studies took Cyril Garrett to Michigan where he received his doctorate in religious education and pastoral psychology and then to teach at Wheaton College in Illinois. It was there that Caroline realized her educational ambitions and received her B.A. Magna Cum Laude from Wheaton College. She later completed her Masters Degree with honors at Azusa Pacific University in Glendale, California. Caroline and Cys passion for each other, travel and education took them to Wichita Kansas, Philadelphia Pennsylvania, West Covina and Berkeley California, Ruschlikon Switzerland, Kalamazoo Michigan, and Minneapolis Minnesota before they moved to Austin, Texas in 1997. Carolines interests and competencies covered a broad spectrum. An elementary school teacher, an accomplished musician and singer, an award winning quilter, a skilled seamstress, a passionate gardener, always an intelligent and avid traveler and a cook and homemaker. In brief, whatever Caroline did she did extremely well and always with her own particular style. Caroline is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Dr. Cyril Garrett, her daughters Maggie Garrett and Martha Russell and her husband Neal M. Burns. In addition to her many life-long friends, nieces and nephews, Caroline also leaves behind her sister Julianne Kelly and her husband J. Patrick Kelly of Alegan, Michigan and seven grandchildren: James Flanigan, Garrett Flanigan and his partner Elisa Perez, Allison Russell Sullivan and her husband Mark Sullivan, Daniel and Natasya Eshoo, Naomi Eshoo, Mark Burns and his wife Amy Arrant, M.D., and Scott Burns. The family will host a private memorial service at the Chapel of The Church of The Good Shepard, at Windsor Rd. and Exposition on Monday afternoon at 4:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Austin Chaplains Benevolence Fund, 512-448-7198. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N.
