Charles Anthony Mitis, known to most as “Tony”, born July 1955 to parents Dr. Charles Z Mitis and Billie Ann Mitis, RN. To all who knew him, a very good and nice man. A genuine, articulate, respectful and unafraid man.
He and his older brother, Stephen, were born in Galveston, Tx. That meant according to their mom, they were BOI-born on the island. They moved to La Marque, TX, soon thereafter. Their father, Dr. Mitis, was still working in Galveston Hospital on with UT medical branch in Galveston. Everyone then moved to Odessa in 1959, when a friend shared news of opportunity and community west Texas.
According to his brother, Tony was a little small growing up. He was close to being completely ambidextrous. He was a good athlete. He was on the Permian High School golf team and on a good day could score close to 70. A champion in playing pool, skilled at ping pong and foosball (though his wife would usually win those games). He was good at all of them. Their father took the boys hunting, snow skiing, and other outdoor activities. They often talked about philosophy, politics and spent hours discussing current events and family updates.
As a young man, he met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Mitis. He stood by her side until her unfortunately passing not long ago. She was a great, great wife, mother and friend. Together they took on the challenges of the world, moving from Odessa, to West Monroe Louisiana, to Kilgore, Texas and finally retiring in Corpus Christi, Texas.
They welcomed two daughters, eldest Jennifer Hamilton and youngest Emily Mitis. His pride for his daughters was unmatched. He was lucky enough to walk Jennifer down the aisle, marrying Dr Zach Hamilton, an amazing man who cares for all of the Mitis family. He celebrated with everyone as Jen and Zach added the smallest of the crew, Charles Ever Hamilton, to roster, and loved spending time with his namesake. He loved seeing Emily travel the world and grow in her passion for education.
He loved his family all so much, and spent his life working diligently to ensure they’re supported, not just financially, but with the skills and mindsets needed to succeed. His daughters, son in-law, and grandson are so, so proud of his work. They feel lucky to have witnessed a love like his and Barbara’s and hold their memories close to their hearts.
Tony took this love for nature from childhood and continued as a skilled hunter, fisher, and all-around outdoorsman. As a young man, Tony met some of his best friends for life. His family is grateful for the Smith Family, the Walker Family, the McNew Family and more, for surrounding him with friendships that made his time on Earth richer, more fun, and filled with adventure. Their stories on the boat, at the deer lease, or on the ranch will be shared and remembered by many. In his career, Tony was a manager for a valve company. He cared greatly for the welfare of those on his team. His reputation in the industry was strong, reliable, and he was known for being direct and honest.
There are endless stories that could be shared about Tony that would highlight his sharp wit, his knack for adventure, and his strong protective role as a father, husband, and friend to so many. These stories will be passed down through all who love him, and bring light in this time of grief.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Mitis, who passed in 2020. He is survived by his children, Jennifer Hamilton (Zach) and Emily Mitis, his cherished grandson, Charles Ever Hamilton; his brother, Stephen Mitis (Amy); and his nieces, Jill Mitis-Jones (Dia) and Stephanie Rhoades (Peter). He will also be fondly remembered by extended family and friends.
