Dorothy was born on September 18, 1927 in Weimar, Texas; the first of 3 children of Emil and Lottie Jalufka. Dorothy spent most of her formative years in Fayette County, Texas (Weimar, Holman, LaGrange). She married Chester Barger at the early age of 17. They resided in Galveston, Texas where they raised nine children.
Dorothy was Galveston’s Mother of the Year in 1959 and rightly so – greatest mother ever; her kids were the most important part of her life.
Dorothy and Chester divorced after 25 years of marriage. She remarried Lewis Evans. Dorothy resided in Austin, Texas until 2005.
In addition to raising nine children, Dorothy was employed as a waitress, a candy rep in Sears candy department, and owned and operated the food and beverage concession stand on the Galveston Party Boats.
“Grandma” was the name Dorothy was called by all in her family. Grandma was the greatest cook ever. Everyone raved on and on about everything she made. Her favorite cooking/baking was Czech. Her apple strudel, kolaches, Bohemian gravy, chicken noodle soup, fried chicken, bar-b-que were outstanding. Everything she made was perfect and she did it all from memory. Up until the time she passed away, she could recite every recipe she ever made. She always looked forward to Thanksgiving with her family and attending and cooking for her family reunions.
Fashion and bling was her thing. She was always so pretty, classy and fabulous.
Grandma was an interesting person, well-read, caring, beautiful, had a loving heart, and enjoyed interacting with people of all ages. Everyone enjoyed her company and conversation. She had the greatest memory, (like an encyclopedia), and she retained her fantastic memory until her passing. Those who knew her will remember Grandma’s smile, love of life and devotion to her Catholic religion. She will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Lottie and Emil Jalufka, husband, Lewis Evans, son, Kevin Wayne Barger, brother, Leonard Jalufka, grandsons, Chester Arthur Barger III, Brandon Salinas, Zachery Salinas, and Jay Barger, granddaughter, Aimee Barger and her best buddy, Billie (the dog).
Dorothy is survived by her sons Chester Arthur Barger Jr. (wife Linda), and John Barger, daughters, Linda Liberto (husband Dan), Susan Ingraham, Donna Harp (husband Dana), Caryn Barger-Riley, Amanda Schell, Danielle Taylor (husband Gene), brother Donald (wife Anna), sister-in-law, Nolie Jalufka, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
