Dorothy Elizabeth McDonald passed away on November 15th, 2012 at the age of 81. Dorothy was born February 8th, 1931 in Nashville, Tennessee to parents John Hugh and Hazel Elizabeth McCann. She moved to Austin, Texas in 1968 with her husband and daughter. While always remaining a true Tennessean, as evidenced by her love and dedication to the annual “McCann Clan” Family Reunion, she also became a devoted Austinite.
Dorothy attended David Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN and passionately participated and led a myriad of volunteer, church, and school events throughout her life. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She married William Larkin McDonald, after a deliberate introduction by her brother. Together they traveled the world representing IBM. They enjoyed a forty-year marriage, prior to his death in 1990. Dorothy’s biggest passion in her life was her family; daughter Elizabeth McDonald Henry and husband, Chet Henry of Austin, and grandchildren Marion Elizabeth Woerner and husband, Kyle Woerner and Samantha Henry. “Dot-Dot,” spent countless hours teaching, spoiling, and showering love on her immediate, extended and ‘surrogate’ family; as there were so many neighbors and friends that considered Dot-Dot family. Dorothy instilled fervor for world travel into this family, who were blessed to make many cherished memories doing so together. At the death of their parents, Dorothy and her siblings, determined to keep the extended family together and to instill a bond with future generations, established an annual reunion attracting family members from across the US that has survived for thirty-three years. She attended Bethany United Methodist Church, and so many will sorely miss her.
She is preceded in death by her father, John Hugh, mother, Hazel, and husband, William “Mac”.
She is survived by her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren, brothers, Charles and John McCann; sister, Carol Burden; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to your favorite charity or Bethany United Methodist Church.
