Dylan Neal Carson died at the age of 29 in Austin, Texas on the evening of March 25, 2019 from an accidental and lethal combination of alcohol and anxiety medication. Dylan struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse for most of his life. His family, especially his Mother, tirelessly fought alongside him and supported his treatment and recovery. After two months of sobriety, Dylan relapsed a week before his death. He was working hard and saving money, and was ready for a place of his own. Dylan had many dreams and aspirations; he recently expressed hopes of one day having a piece of land where he could enjoy the quiet and beauty of the countryside.
Dylan was born on January 22, 1990, at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, to parents Phyllis and Neal Carson. Dylan and his younger sister Callie enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in Austin. Dylan attended Doss Elementary School, Murchison Middle School, Anderson High School and completed his education at Gonzalo Garza High School. As a child Dylan loved family trips to the beach, camping, fishing on Lake Travis, and days spent on the Blanco River. He played basketball and baseball, with his father as a coach on his little league team. As an adult he became a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.
Although his struggles with alcohol and substance abuse robbed him of the rich and full life that he deserved, Dylan was loved by many and a stranger to no one. He had a rare ability to befriend and lift the spirits of everyone he encountered. Dylan had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh, especially his grandmother. He was also very sensitive and felt empathy towards people less fortunate.
Dylan was a loyal friend and openly offered help to those in need.
A close family friend, Steve Colmar, was a great supporter and big fan during Dylan's life. He was impressed with Dylan's intelligence, and his ability to connect with people. He wanted Dylan to finish his education, and join his team in the financial world. He felt Dylan had the ability to surpass him, and hoped one day he could change his ways, and pursue this opportunity.
Dylan was preceded in death by his father, Neal, and his grandfather, Frank Eugene Ward. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis, his sister Callie, grandmother and step- grandfather, Elaine and Billy Mitchell, step-grandmother, Diane Ward, and his uncle, aunts and cousins.
His family and friends take comfort in knowing that Dylan is surrounded by light, free from the struggles that haunted him. They would have done anything for him to experience that freedom in this lifetime, and deeply wish he could have been one of few that beat the disease of addiction.
Dylan was loved dearly. The loss and emptiness will be felt forever. A memorial will be held on Saturday, April 13th from 11am to 1pm, at the family's home, 3505 Bridle Path, 78703, Austin Texas.
