

Elizabeth Gordon Carlisle was born on Friday, July 13, 1917 in Whitewright, Texas. She died on December 20, 2009 in Austin, Texas. She was predeceased by her husband, James Newton Carlisle; her sister, Dorothy Gordon Johnson; and her parents, Robert Pitts Gordon and Sophia Elizabeth Pope Gordon. She is survived by her three daughters, Elizabeth Jane Carlisle Maxwell, Dorothy Kay Carlisle Ash and her husband, Stewart, and Sarah Ann Carlisle Silber and her husband, Charles and her nephew, Robert O'Brien Johnson. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Deanna Jane Ash Devore, James Carlisle Maxwell, Melissa Ann Ash, and Cheryl Louise Slater Smith. The greatest lights of her life were her great-grandchildren, Jack and Colin Maxwell, Ashton Smith, and her new namesake, Samantha Elizabeth Devore. Elizabeth graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1939, married Newt Carlisle in 1940, and has been a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother not only to her own family but to an extended network of friends young and old. She served on the Thursday morning altar guild at St. David's Episcopal Church for a quarter of a century and she was a member of the Women's Bowling Association of the Saengerrunde Association. She always had a smile and welcoming hug for everyone she met. The family would like to thank the staff of the Westlake Summit Assisted Living Unit not only for their compassionate care, but also for enriching the quality of her life. In lieu of flowers, Elizabeth would be honored with donations to St. David's Altar Guild, St. David's Episcopal Church, 301 E. 8th Street, Austin TX 78701, or to a charity of your choice. Services at St. David's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 1:30pm. Parking available in the Church's parking garage. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park.
