Emmett Solon Glosson, age 96, passed away from this world to his heavenly home to be with Jesus and his wife, Dorothy Fields Glosson.
Emmett was born on June 21, 1925, to Solon Bell Glosson and Janie Mae Jennings Glosson. He was born on Walnut Creek off Rutherford Dr. in Austin, Texas. Although they did have a house, he was born in a tent because it was cooler.
Emmett and Dorothy married on June 20, 1943, the day before he turned 18 and the month before she turned 18. They were married seventy years at the time Dorothy passed away in 2013. As a bonus, his son, Joe, was born on Emmett’s birthday and his daughter, Sandra, was born on Dorothy’s birthday. When asked how that happened, he would say, “You just have to know what you’re doing”.
He received his draft notice 9 days after he turned 18 and 8 days after he married Dorothy. He went into the 42nd Rainbow Division of the Army, as a coincidence on 9/11/1943. He served in Germany following Patton and was a machine gunner, bugler, and driver for the officers. He was always called on to drive the officer or do important tasks and asked his Sergeant Rentchler why they always called on him. The Sergeant told him that it was because they knew he would always come back to the unit and because he had a praying wife and praying mother at home.
After the war, he received training in floor covering through the GI bill. He then started work for a floor covering company in Austin, then started his own business in floor covering with his brother Aubrey Glosson. After a while, Aubrey moved to Midland and started his own floor covering business. Emmett owned A&E Floors for 47 years.
At age 34, Emmett joined the City of Austin Fire Department at the encouragement of his long-time friend, Brady Pool, who eventually became a Chief in the fire department. Emmett received Fireman of the Year. He was one of the first of a group of eight firemen, including his son, Joe Glosson, to be EMT certified in the State of Texas for the Austin Fire Department. He is the 1st of three generations City of Austin Firemen. His son, Joe Glosson who retired as a Lieutenant after 30 years in the City of Austin Fire Department, and Emmett’s first Grandchild, Kevin Gell who retired as a Lieutenant after 34 years in the City of Austin Fire Department. He was respected by the firemen that served under him as being a Christian, being fair, and encouraging them to keep their heads in the books and become the best fireman on the force. He continued to be visited by many firemen that served under him, i.e., Jose DeLeon, Craig Braddock, Larry Moomey, and several others. He had the first female fire person in the City of Austin Fire Department, as the Chiefs knew that Captain Glosson would be fair with her as a fire person and female.
Emmett was a beekeeper, catching his first swarm of bees across the street from Central Fire Station on 5th Street in Austin. He was known as the “My Honey Man”. He received 1st Place for The Best Tasting Honey in Texas, three years in a row, from the Texas Beekeepers Association. He was instrumental in teaching several firemen the art of beekeeping.
His passion was hunting and fishing. He fished on the Rio Grande and Three Rivers with his son, his brother, Aubrey, and his grandsons, Kevin Gell and Jeremy and Timothy Gell, along with his Son-in-law, Hank Robinson. He loved showing off pictures from his successful fishing trips.
He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, wife, sisters, Ann Turner, Merle McKinney, Jackie Neely, and brothers, Milton Glosson, Aubrey Glosson, and Weldon Glosson.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Robinson and, his son, Joe Glosson, He is also survived by his Grandchildren, Kevin Gell (Lisa), Cheryl Short, Jason Glosson (Julie), Jody Lindquist (Logan). He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Donna Johnson (Bob), Raigenne Evans, Sharon Harvey (Dudley), Walter Glosson (Carolyn), and Monte Glosson. Sandra married Hank Robinson who had custody of his five children whom they raised, Connie Robinson, Maggie Ellis (Les lie), Beth Pharis (Joe), Kathy Panno (Pete), and Robby Robinson (Renee). Amongst all nine grandchildren, he had twenty Great Grandchildren and eleven Great-Great Grandchildren. Emmett loved all his children, Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, and Great-Great Grandchildren, and never differentiated between them.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Timothy Gell, Anthony Gell, Jason Glosson, Christopher Kinard, Robby Robinson, and Joe Pharis.
He and his wife lived their lives as a Christian man and wife, raising their children to follow in their footsteps, loving God, believing in Jesus, going to church, and being a good example of what a good Christian man or woman should be.
