Emmy was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, cherishing her summers spent at Ocean Grove. In her young life, she was an avid musician who sang in the state choir and played the flute. She also enjoyed playing field hockey. She continued to enjoy music throughout her life, attending the opera whenever she had the chance and singing in the church choir.
She developed a love of civics early, and, after graduating from Westfield High School in 1956, she joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority and studied Political Science at DePauw University, completing her degree in 1960. She relocated to Austin, Texas to study law and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from The University of Texas in 1964, after which she worked for federal and state government. She participated in several political and voting organizations, and served numerous times as a precinct chair and election judge in Travis County. In 2019, she ran for Pflugerville City Council.
Emmy married in 1965 and had four daughters. She is survived by her two sisters, Mary Weiss of Stoughton, WI and Katherine Morris of San Diego, CA; four daughters, Katherine McDaniel of Scottsdale, AZ, Susan Bravenec of Seattle, WA, Mary Goff of Caldwell, TX, and Constance McDaniel Wyman of Austin, TX; and nine grandchildren: Downing, David, Emory, Daniel, William, Gabrielle, Sterling, Liam, and Elizabeth.
A celebration of her life will be held in Ocean Grove, NJ in August in honor of what would have been her 84th birthday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Texas League of Women Voters (https://www.lwvtexas.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=979482&module_id=476281 ), or the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association in support of their annual choir festival (https://www.oceangrove.org/give).
