Ernest Dell Cook Sr. (Mr. Wonderful) was born on January 2, 1944, in Bertram, Texas, to Harvey Ware and Martha Alma Cook. On March 5, 2026, Ernie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the family who adored him.
Ernie married the love of his life, Patsy Nell McKamie, on August 30, 1963. Together they built a life full of laughter, hard work, and love while raising three boys: Ernest Dell Cook Jr. (Wanda), Paul Anthony Cook (Jessica), and David Wayne Cook (Lisa). If you ever heard a good story–or a perfectly timed joke–there’s a good chance Ernie told it.
He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Joshua, Racheal, Christopher (Amanda), Shelby, Kiley, and Landon Cook, along with several nieces and nephews. His grandkids brought him endless joy, and he never missed a chance to cheer them on, tease them a little, or share one of his famous stories.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Martha Cook, and his older sisters, Martha Sue and Scharlotte Ann. He is survived by his younger sisters, Sandra Webster and Debbie Craft.
A dedicated member of Promiseland (World of Pentecost) for over 50 years, Ernie faithfully served his church in many roles. He was head usher, a Sunday school teacher, and the coach, player, and even bus driver for the church softball team. If there was a fundraiser or special event, you could usually find him tending to the BBQ pit or lending a helping hand.
For 40 years, Ernie worked as a successful paper salesman, though most people would say his real talent was talking to people. He truly never met a stranger, and most conversations ended with a smile, a laugh, and a new friend.
Ernie will be remembered for his big heart, quick wit, unforgettable stories, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. The world was a brighter, funnier place with him in it. He will be deeply missed, but the laughter and love he shared will live on in all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be heLd at Promiseland Chapel, 1504 East 51st Street, Austin, Texas 78723, on Saturday, March 28th, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.
