

Eugene Yu Feng Shen, son of Si-San Shen & Chew-La Shen, was born on March 20, 1913 in Soochow, China, which is an ancient city with a high degree of culture, famous of cultivating scholars. He graduated from Soochow University, receiving the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology and taught at Soochow University and Shanghai College of Medicine.
After moved to Taiwan in 1948, Eugene taught at Department of Botany, Taiwan National University. After earned his A.M. degree at Indiana University in 1953, Eugene returned to National Taiwan University to teach at Department of Botany, and later served as chairman of the department. He was awarded as an exchange Fulbright Scholar in 1962 to the University of Texas at Austin, and his wife, Margaret, joined him in 1963. After received his Ph. D. in 1966 from University of Texas at Austin, Eugene taught at National Taiwan University, Wisconsin State University and University of Texas at Austin until retirement. He loved cooking and traveling. He published a cook book entitled The Art and Science of Chinese Cookery in honor of his wife, Margaret's 70th birthday. After Margaret retired from National Institute of Health in North Carolina in 1984, they moved back to Austin, Texas to settle down.
He was married to Margaret C. Y. Wu, his classmate at Soochow University, on January 2nd, 1940 in Shanghai. Two daughters, Grace and Alice, and one son, Albert, were born to this marriage. He had four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He rested in peace with our gracious Lord on February 25, 2015. In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to Austin Chinese Church Building Fund, 11118 Dessau Road, Austin, Texas 78754 in Memory of Eugene Shen.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 am on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress with Funeral Service to begin at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
