Eva Winston Eva Beatrice Meredith Winston, 96, died peacefully at her home on Sunday morning, October 26, 2003. She was born in Austin on July 9, 1907, to John Morgan Meredith and Effie Elizabeth Blum Meredith. Mrs. Winston attended the old St. Marys Academy (present site of the Omni Hotel), riding the Sixth St. trolley from the family home on Oakland Avenue. She graduated from Austin High School in 1925. On December 2, 1928, Mrs. Winston married Philip Eldridge Winston in Ft. Worth, Texas. The union lasted 66 years until Mr. Winston, a retired Assistant State Treasurer, died at age 90 in 1994. The Winstons were faithful members of Central Presbyterian Church (formerly First Southern Presbyterian). Mrs. Winstons membership there lasted 65 years. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Winston was preceded in death by her brother, Dan Reagan Meredith, and a sister, Ada Mae Meredith Wilson. Survivors include her son, Philip Eldridge Winston, Jr., and wife, Sylvia, of San Diego, California; her daughter, Patricia Elaine Winston, of Austin; her grandchildren Scott Thomas Winston and Jennifer Elaine Winston of San Diego, California; her sister Kathryn Ann Meredith Fowler, and husband Clare, of Vancleave, Mississippi. Mrs. Winston is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank those who were Mrs. Winstons caregivers during the last three months of her life, including the staff of Austin Home Health Care, the staff of Odyssey Hospice, and Geraline Bradshaw, Mitzi Bradshaw, and Kelly Pachall of Professional Caretakers. In a life that spanned almost a century, Mrs. Winston had wonderful friends and neighbors; many are now gone. The family wishes to acknowledge those who remain and who would thoughtfully send her a letter, telephone her, or stop to visit. A special thanks is due to next-door neighbor Kay Beneke whose Wednesday night visits and discussions of current events so brightened Mrs. Winstons week. These neighbors, friends, family and, at the end, caregivers all contributed to Mrs. Winstons being able to live comfortably in her home of 43 years until the end of her life. A memorial service and celebration of Eva Winstons life will be conducted by the Rev. Greg McDonnell at Central Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2003. Following the service, a reception will be held in Smoot Hall, adjoining the church. The church is located at 200 E. Eighth St. at Brazos. Parking is available in the Perry-Brooks Building Parking Garage. A private internment of ashes will follow the service. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Central Presbyterian Church, to the Presbyterian Childrens Homes (4407 Bee Caves Rd., Austin, Texas 78746), or to a charity of ones choice.
