Evelyn Ora Evans Akin

Evelyn O. Evans Akin, age 89, died on June 20, 2014, at St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, after a brief illness. She was born on January 8, 1925, in Bandera, Texas. Evelyn moved to San Antonio, Texas, at the age of one. In high school, Evelyn was the pianist for the Girls’ Glee Club and graduated as valedictorian from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1942. She then completed a year of study at Draughon’s Business School.

In 1942, Evelyn’s mother introduced her to the love of her life, Allen F. Akin, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. They were married on July 10, 1947, in San Antonio. Their daughter, Nancy, was born in 1952, followed by their son, Tom, in 1954. The following year Allen’s job transferred the family to Austin, Texas. In 1956 they bought a new home on Cloverleaf Drive, where Evelyn resided until her passing.

Once her children were born, Evelyn devoted herself to raising her family. The family’s church home was always Asbury United Methodist Church. Evelyn spent many years as a pre-kindergarten Sunday school teacher and was a longtime member of the United Methodist Women.

Evelyn and Allen enjoyed 48 years of marriage before his death in 1995. She carried on an active life with her children, grandchildren, neighbors, and church involvement.

Evelyn is survived by daughter, Nancy Kier (Bob), and son, Tom Akin (Sarita). She was proud of her five grandchildren: Katie Kier Kaighin (Jim), Megan Kier Barron, Christi Akin Wengler (Jon), Molly Kier, and Brent Akin (Jezire). She dearly loved her four great-grandchildren: Vivian and Lexi Kaighin, Mason Barron, and Jackson Wengler.

The family was greatly blessed by Evelyn’s loving companion/ caregivers over the past 4 years: Bonnie Gomez, Mickie Acuna, and Janie Soliz.

Visitation with the family will be on Monday, June 23, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 in the evening at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas. Celebration of Evelyn’s life will be on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., also at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in Stockdale, Texas.
