Florine Julia Annie Rust Weiss passed away peacefully on September 16, 2012 in Austin. She was born March 30, 1917 in the Richland Community to Anton W. and Julia A. Rust and grew up in the New Sweden area with her siblings Roydell, Lula Belle, Waldine, Grace, and Janelle. She married Alton Willie Weiss on October 9, 1937 and their marriage lasted 69 years until Alton’s death in 2006. They had four children: Virgil, Kay, Ronnie and Nancy. They also were blessed with six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Florine and her family lived for over 58 years in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin and she helped assure that all of her children graduated from the University of Texas.
Florine was renown for her cooking skills, with baking as her specialty. She never followed a recipe as written and measuring ingredients was a foreign concept to her. Florine also had a green thumb and was known as the “Plant Lady” by many students and neighbors. Even at age 95, she still “piddled” in the yard with her roses and begonias. Florine dedicated her life to being a great wife, mother and “Granny.” She is survived by two sisters (Grace Farris and Janelle Williams), her children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
