With deep sorrow, the children of Dr. Forrest E. Ward of Austin, Texas announce the death of our father on September 24, 2021. Dr. Ward passed away after a short illness. Our dad was preceded in death by his wife Vera D. Ward in 2012 after almost 60 years of marriage. Dr. Ward was, to date, the longest living male in the Ward family. Born to Forrest Bedford Ward and Sallie Mae Phelps Ward in Bayou La Batre, Alabama on February 3, 1922. He is survived by his children, son Forrest Randall Ward and his wife Jill L. Ward are residents of Austin, Texas and daughter Karen Ward Welch and her husband Greg S. Welch are residents of Terrell, Texas. Dr. Ward was also a grandfather to Heather Amanda Welch of Terrell and one great grandson Aiden Cole Welch of Terrell. He is also survived by nieces and nephews who were so good to visit him and stay in contact with him throughout the years.
After graduation from High School in Troup, Texas dad attended NTSU in Denton before enlisting in the Navy during WW II. After the end of the war, dad would study further at NTSU and after receiving his master’s degree, he attended the University of Texas at Austin to obtain his doctorate. All the while, Dad was also teaching in Alvin, Texas at Alvin Junior College. After receiving his Ph.D. and having completed this phase of his life, he returned to teaching full time and was on the faculty at Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas. In his final year at Southwestern, he was voted Teacher of the Year, an honor he was extremely proud of.
Dad left teaching to work for the College Coordinating Board and after retirement from that organization he remained in Austin. He was known to his neighbors and family as a man that was always active for his age and was enjoying walking around his neighborhood and the surrounding area keeping fit. He always had a smile and a hello for those that passed his house walking as he so enjoyed doing. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
The family has chosen to have a private service to honor our father.
