It is with heavy yet grateful hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Dad (“Tata”), Francisco (“Frank”) Rodriguez Ortiz, age 94, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at his home in South Austin, Texas—resting in his favorite spot on his porch enjoying the sunshine, surrounded by the sights and sounds he loved.
He was born on October 5, 1931, in Austin, Texas, to Manuel Ortiz and Carmen Rodriguez Ortiz. He was one of 8 sons. Frank married the love of his life, Rebecca Cortinas Ortiz, on March 31, 1951. Together, they built a life rooted in love and family and were blessed with nine children—five boys and four girls, including two sets of fraternal twins. Their 70 years of marriage stand as a lasting example of devotion, and we find comfort imagining their joyful reunion in heaven.
A devout Catholic, his faith was unwavering. Frank’s faith guided his life. He found joy in music, especially mariachi, and in the simple, meaningful moments spent with family. Known to many as Tata, he was a steady, loving presence whose warmth brought comfort and joy to all who knew him. Whether traveling, celebrating holidays, or simply being together, he treasured every moment with his family. Frank’s greatest legacy is his love.
He was a hard worker, dedicated to always providing for his family. He had a very successful career as a butcher with Austin City Meat Company and Texas Meat Purveyors over a span of 45 years. During retirement, he worked with the City of Austin in maintenance. His continued support in the community was demonstrated through his daily visits to the South Austin Senior Activity Center. The activities he enjoyed regularly were exercising, assisted in serving meals to fellow seniors, playing lotería, attending many dance events and celebrations. During this time, he made many friends.
He was one of two remaining original home owners in the neighborhood from the 1960’s. One of his favorite things was spending his early afternoons on the front porch, welcoming passers-by and new neighbors with a kind hello or conversation. He gave freely and wholeheartedly, always showing up for his family in both quiet and meaningful ways. His kindness, strength, and generosity will remain with us always.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Cortinas Ortiz; his parents, Manuel and Carmen; his brothers – Julian, Manuel Jr., Robert, Sylvester, Jesse, José; son-in-law Henry Calderon.
Frank is survived by his 9 children – Sylvia Calderon, Frank Ortiz, Jr. and his wife RoxAnn, Richard Ortiz, Diane Robinson and her husband Terry, Daniel Ortiz and his wife Carmen, Albert Ortiz, Annette Evans and her husband Hiroshi, Anthony Ortiz and his wife Mary Alice, and Veronica Tello, 20 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, his brother Ernest Ortiz and his wife Carmen, and his sister-in-law RoseMary Ortiz.
Frank lived 94 years full of love, laughter, and a quiet wit that could surprise and delight. We will miss his smile, his gentle presence, and the many small ways he showed his love—through a hug, a shared meal, or simply sitting beside us. We will miss his stories and our Sunday breakfasts, moments that now feel like life’s greatest gifts. We are profoundly grateful for his life, wisdom, love, and for the peaceful way he was called home. He had so much courage and inner strength. His legacy will continue to live on through all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Though we will miss him always, we carry him with us—in our hearts, in our traditions, and in the love, he gave so freely. Forever in our hearts, Dad (“Tata”).
