Frank J. Poos, born June 11, 1944, passed on to his heavenly reward on November 26, 2025 at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House, after a brief but serious illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria Poos for 35 years.
Frank’s life on this earth was marked with an unwavering faith in God, a tireless desire to serve those in need, and to comfort his fellowman regardless of status, nationality or creed. He will be remembered for the way he lived and for the profound impact he had on all of those who were blessed to know him.
Frank is survived by his loving wife, Maria; his children Josue, married to Nora; Marcos, married to Daenna; Frankie, married to Ilse; and Timmy; and his grandchildren Josh, Christopher, Mateo, Frank William, and Mayte. He is also survived by his brothers Mike, Tom and Larry; sisters Laura, Cathy, Bernadette, Ann and Denise; brothers-in-law Don, Alex, and Angel; and sisters-in-law Peggy, Karen, Eileen, Mariana, Mague and Zoila.
After his graduation from Bishop Dennis J. O’Connell High School, Falls Church, VA., in 1962, he went on to serve his country in the US Army, in Baumholder, Germany. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971 and eventually became a licensed Master Plumber in Texas. After obtaining his university degree he helped start a vocational training school in La Paila, Colombia, and later taught vocational training on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in Belcourt, N.D. Frank joined the Maryknoll Brothers from 1977-1982 and served in Tanzania, Yemen and the Bronx, NY. He co-founded the Food Pantry at St. Louis church in 1984 and led a Eucharist Ministry for patients at the Seton Hospital. For many years he served the poor as a volunteer with the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He actively served with the Kairos Prison Ministry in Texas until his death.
Outside of his career and mission work Frank loved camping, cycling, hiking, and canoeing. He was fond of long drives. He loved choir singing and music of all kinds. He loved to read, particularly the poetry of Robert Frost and the works of C.S. Lewis. He especially loved visits with family. He had an uncanny knack for repairing things and solving mechanical problems, which he constantly used to help family and friends.
His dedication to his faith left its mark on all of us, especially his beautiful sample of simplicity and his caring heart. Those who knew Frank will miss his love for Jesus, his soft-spoken kindness and his dry sense of humor, but we know his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth his legacy of love and compassion in all that we do.
The family extends its gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Kingwood Hospital, Houston; Dell Seton Hospital, Austin; and Hospice Austin’s Christopher House, whose love and expert care were such a comfort to Frank and all of his family.
