Gamani Kitsiri Goonatilaka passed away in Austin, Texas on November 9, 2020, at the age of 80. Gamani was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka on June 9, 1940 to M.D.S. Goonatilaka and Violet Goonatilaka. Gamani was married to his high school sweetheart, Merlyn Goonatilaka for 58 happy years. The couple made their home and raised their family in Austin, Texas. He worked at Motorola for 20 years before retirement. Gamani enjoyed his career so much, he eventually went back to work at Enhanced Production Technologies.
Gamani and Merlyn were avid cruise-goers and enjoyed traveling the world together, taking in the sites and trying different foods. Gamani thoughtfully documented his many travels through his love for videography and shared those video creations with family and friends. However well-traveled he was, his favorite destination remained his home country, Sri Lanka. Everyone who knew Gamani knew that he was a pilar of the Austin Sri Lankan community. He and Merlyn loved to host big parties and welcomed everyone and anyone. At the end of a long day, there was nothing Gamani loved more than sitting on the recliner and watching Sinhala teledramas with Merlyn.
Gamani is survived by his wife, Merlyn, and three daughters and son, Kumudu Arachchi (Vasantha) of Freehold, New Jersey; Prasangi Boteju (Lakmal) of South Brunswick, New Jersey; Namalie deSilva (Srinath) of Round Rock, Texas; and son Nishantha of Austin, Texas; as well as his grandchildren, Charith, Dineth, Avantha, Asela, Ruwendika, Avinda, Erantha, Sachin, and Naduni. Gamani is also survived by his two sisters, Chitra Dehipitiya and Lakshmie Runaweera, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gamani was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.D.S Goonatilaka, and sisters, Sujatha Arseculeratne and Amitha Chandrasoma.
