Gaylord Vincent Magnuson passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2026, after an extended illness. He was born July 12, 1941 in Elgin, Texas to Viva Lee Axell Magnuson and Klaus George Valentine Magnuson.
Gaylord was a proud “Texas Swede.” He was part of his family’s first generation in America from Sweden. His life began on the family farm in New Sweden where he learned to pick cotton, harvest corn, raise chickens, and tend livestock. Times were busy with school and farm chores, but there was always time for New Sweden Lutheran Church where his mother was organist, and his father sang in the choir. Life changed drastically when his family moved to Austin in 1951. He quickly forged new and lasting friendships through school, Little League Baseball and Gethsemane Lutheran Church. He graduated from McCallum High and attended the University of Texas. His career included over 50 years in banking and real estate, both areas from which he made lifelong friends with fellow colleagues and customers.
He served in the Texas National Guard as an MP in the 49th Armored Division. His unit was called to one year of active duty in 1961 for the Cuban missile crisis and Berlin Wall construction. For many years, he served in the University Optimist Club, taught banking classes for the American Institute of Banking, was a precinct chairman, and a director of Texas Pioneer Farm Mutual Insurance Company.
He was actively involved with Gethsemane Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council, played on the Church’s state championship fast-pitch softball team, and served on many committees, including refugee resettlement, youth sponsorship, and Fair Trade. He enjoyed close friendships with other church families who were a source of consolation and joy throughout the years. The families vacationed together for over 50 years and the children became “beach cousins.” Gaylord was very proud and thankful that the younger generations stepped in to continue this cherished annual beach tradition.
He married his high-school sweetheart, Judith Arlene Wire – a marriage that spanned over 66 years, and they loved that their home was the “headquarters” for family gatherings and celebrations. He enjoyed time with family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching UT sports and (of course) the Astros, hunting in the Texas Hill Country, golfing with friends, and always looked forward to his monthly lunches with some of his lifelong friends.
Gaylord was truly interested in others and never met a stranger. He enjoyed visiting with people wherever he went, whether at the local grocery store or during worldly travels.
He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, George Edward Magnuson, Donald Lee Magnuson, and brother-in law David Henry Wire. He is survived by his children, Vince Magnuson, Ginger Magnuson, Vicki Magnuson; grandchildren, Jason Magnuson (Hannah), Megan Magnuson, Joshua Taylor, Amanda Rose Taylor (James Christenson), Veda Allen (Stephen Gossett); great-grandchildren, Ava Magnuson, Mali Magnuson; brother-in-law, Daniel Jack Wire; sisters-in-law, Cindy Parr and Jackie Wire; and many dear cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, in April. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations may be made to Gethsemane Lutheran Church Food Pantry, Hospice Austin, All Things Wild Rehabilitation, or a charity of your choice.
