Gladys moved to Austin in 1980 where she attended the Criss Cole School for the Blind, which prepared her for a career in the Bindery Department of the Perry-Castaneda Library, as an employee of the University of Texas. During her employment at the University of Texas, Gladys went back to college and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Drama at the age of 58. Gladys retired from the University of Texas in 1994. Gladys enjoyed her retirement writing plays, poetry, attending the theater and watching opera and listening to classical music.
