
We knew Gene as a kind, gentle, and very wise Christian leader.  It was a joy to learn from him.  I thank the Lord for Gene's years of faithful service.  It is a great pleasure to bow our knees to the same Savior he served.



I grew up hearing Gene's name from my father who was a friend of his in college and I knew that he was someone my dad (Carmelo Casella) highly respected. So I was very glad to come to know some of his children, much later in life, (who had grown up hearing my father's name,too) and to have my own children enjoy friendship with Gene's grandchildren. I finally met him, once, in very recent years, and look forward to knowing him where miles won't keep family and friends separate. May God comfort all of you who will miss his presence in your important milestones as well as your every day walk.



I met Gene for the first time in May 2013 at a family function. Given that I was introduced to Gene so late in his life, I mostly know Gene through his legacy. Gene is a testimony as to what legacies are made of. The stories told to me about Gene can be largely represented by two major areas: his character and the impact he had on others.

As for his character, Gene exhibited a strong confidence. His confidence exhibited itself most clearly through a calm and peaceful nature, which influenced others around him and caused them to draw from his strength. At key times, Gene was able to restore peace to situations that had lost control and redirect people to working together. This reminds me of Matthew 5:9: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God".

Gene also impacted the lives of others, including his family and those he met through his ministry. Gene was a leader and the patriarch of his family. He invested in his children by teaching them how to make good decisions. He did this by experiencing situation with them, allowing them to make a decision and then asking questions to review it with them. He took a very hands-on approach to seeing that they grew wise. He also taught them about Jesus and the impact He had on his life. By introducing them to his Savior, Gene spread the good news of Christ through generations and guided his family toward salvation. Gene also impacted the lives of others he met through his ministries. Many people have come to know the Lord through Gene and will forever live in heaven because the Lord chose to reveal His message through Gene.

I didn't know Gene personally. I know Gene through his legacy. To me, Gene represents an instructive lesson as to what legacies are made of. I hope that one day my legacy can be as impactful as his.



Gene has been a wonderful leader, teacher and friend to so many.  Your family reflects his qualities, and I know how proud he had always been of all of  his children and grandchildren.  Our family has been entwined with your family in a special way, and we will always treasure this connection.  Dear, Lu, how sad we feel for your loss, and we pray for comfort that comes from the Lord.

My Papaw (Gene).... 

Was an inspiration to so many including me, his granddaughter. 
He was a man of integrity, faith, character and an amazing leader of his home.  He left a legacy that only by God's grace could anyone try to live up to.  I will never forget one memorable conversation at 13 with him about baptism. It was profound and helped influence me to make the decision to seek it out on my own.
He is no longer suffering and is in the arms of Jesus, which I greatly envy.  This is only a temporary parting for I'll be seeing him in heaven on the other side.  No words are good enough to describe my admiration for my Papaw.

Gene was a kind-hearted gentleman, without whose encouragement and support I would not have have pursued seminary or graduate studies thereafter. He met me where I was with gentleness. This is one of the most sterling attributes that a teacher can have. I will always be grateful to him for being patient with me when it was exceedingly difficult to do so, for always going the extra mile in sufferance. I will always hold the memory of him close to my heart.



Dear Lu, Mark, Sara, Teal, and other members of the family,

What a joy it has been to know and work along side Gene Patterson for these many years!  I first knew Gene and Lu when they were at the University Church of Christ and worked with the students at UT.  I was one of those students and, having grown up in a very small town, I felt lost except for my Christian family.  Through the years, I have come to love Gene and Lu even more as I saw them take such an interest in the international community.  This 'Gentle Giant' as he has become known will be greatly missed!   



Gene was such a precious, gentle man.  I'll never forget his leading the family in prayer in a circle before I left their home sometimes, and the incredible legacy he left through the Bible Study Center in San Angelo and through his children and the following generations.  Those were just the places I saw God's hand working through him directly, and I'm forever changed by that.



Dear Lu, Mark, Jeff, Kay, Sara, and all your family:  

Kay and I were very close growing up, and your Dad really helped me feel like part of your family.  I was invited for dinner one night when you lived on Fortune Drive.  Your Dad led a Sunday evening family Bible Study.  I remember learning that Timothy's mother was Eunice!  

This past Sunday I walked in the Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer.  I finished in time for Sunday School and part of the service at University Avenue Church of Christ.  Many people I talked to remembered Gene and asked about him.  A group of my friends and I present a monthly worship service at
the Retirement and Nursing Center where Gene was living.  In September he was alert and talkative.  I reminisced with him about the old days when Kay would play piano duets with me on my violin.  He remembered the paper flowers Kay and I would make and sell and the games we played at their house.

Gene also told me that his greatest wish was that his family would continue to spread God's love to everyone in their lives.  He was a wonderful positive influence by sharing his faith with innumerable people.
He and Lu raised an incredible Christian family.  This Thanksgiving we can all be thankful for his life and his legacy.




Although I never got to know Gene, I knew a part of him through knowing his daughter Kay who is such a godly woman.  He gave the best to his family- love and faith.  God bless you all with peace and a deeper faith than what you had yesterday.



Gene is with the Lord as a servant who left a blessed family legacy-may we honor him in doing the same.

Lucretia and Family,  We were so sorry to hear of Gene's passing.  The two of you did a lot for the church at Hyde Park when you were with us and you have been missed.  May God bless you with the best memories of the time you and Gene had together.  May He give you the peace and comfort that only He can give as you go through this season of grieving.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.  May it give you comfort in knowing that we all know where Gene is and we will see him again.
