Affectionately known as “Ray” to many, Hollis was born in Austin, Texas on February 17, 1951, and was the second of six children born to Hollis & Mildred (Wiley) Moffett. Raised in the St. John Community in central Austin, Ray grew up surrounded by the love of many relatives and friends, with whom he built close, life-long relationships. At an early age, he accepted Christ and was baptized at St. Paul Baptist Church. In his adult years, he joined the fellowship of East Nineteenth Street Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member, and a singer in the M.C. Walker Male Chorus.
In his youth, Ray attended Austin- area schools, and was a very proud graduate of the Old L.C. Anderson High School, Class of 1969. As a Yellow Jacket, he was a member of the football team (#70), which prepared him for his transition to college football at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. While at Sam Houston State, Ray met the love of his life, Lee Joyce Cooper, and they were married in November of 1973. Once married, Ray & Lee Joyce moved back to Austin to begin their life and start a family; to their union two daughters were born- Adrianne Rae and Andrea Lynne.
For nearly 40 years, Ray worked for U.S. Foods (formerly White Swan) before his retirement. After retirement, he found time to enjoy some of his favorite pastimes like cooking, listening to music, and watching westerns. Anyone who knew him well knew he was a super fan of the Dallas Cowboys, and he never missed a game. Beyond those things, he always enjoyed time with his family, and loved spending quality time with his grandchildren, whom he cherished dearly.
Ray was preceded in death by his father, Hollis and his mother Mildred; his mother-in-law Routine Cooper; his sisters Jo Carol Moffett and Jean Moffett Dendy; and his brother Harry “Tommy” Moffett.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of almost 46 years, Lee Joyce Moffett; his daughters, Adrianne Rae & Andrea Lynne Moffett; two grand-daughters, Deja Moffett and Desirae Zachary; four grandsons, DeAndre Moffett, Dominique Zachary, Darious Zachary and Damione Moffett; his sister, Sharon Washington (Herman), his brother Harrell Moffett (Martha); his brothers-in-law, Henry Dendy, Rev. I.C. Cooper, Jr., and Rev. Connie L. Cooper (Evelyn), and his sisters-in-law, Roberta Downey, Mattie Frazier and Margie Reed (John). He also leaves a lifetime of cherished memories with an extensive host of relatives, friends, classmates and many others who loved him dearly.
