Iris was born May 8, 1924 in Houston, Texas, the second daughter of Ella and Albert Werner. She attended Lamar High School and Rice University in Houston. During World War 2 she worked for Humble Oil. In 1949 she met William Harris Lester, a decorated WW 2 veteran, in a Sunday school class in Houston. They dated and quickly knew it was meant to be. Iris and William were married on April 20, 1950 and settled for a time in Corpus Christi. Iris and William were the love and light of each other's lives. They would've celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in April.
Iris and William had their first and only child, William, Jr., on September 9, 1954. In 1959, the family moved to Austin where she lived until recently. The family were members of St. John's United Methodist Church in Austin.
After raising their son, Iris was a regular volunteer at St. David's hospital. In later years she worked with the board of trustees for the Century Club of the McCombs School of Business. Recently Iris and William relocated to San Antonio to be near their son and his wife Valerie.
Iris was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She rarely raised her voice or spoke a harsh word. She was an elegant, poised and joyful person who projected positive thoughts for everyone.
Iris is survived by her husband William, her son William, Jr. and his wife Valerie, of San Antonio, and her granddaughter Caitlin and her husband John Holcomb of Dallas. She will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved her.
Her family will host a visitation at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar in Austin on Saturday March 7 at 1:00 pm with memorial services at 2:00 pm and a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church in Austin.
