He was born August 8th 1942 to Gnita F Johnston and James Gray G Gilbert Sr. in St Louis, Missouri.
Jim Graduated from Rocky River High School in 1960 and went on to the University of Michigan where he graduated with a physics degree in 1964.
Jim Gilbert and Judy Burghdorf were married in October of 1964 and had a daughter Martha.
Jim was employed by IBM right out of college. Jim & Judy moved to Ft. Walden Beach Florida for his first assignment at Eglin Air Force Base. In 1969 IBM moved them to the Washington DC area where he continued to work with computers for the government and the New York Stock Exchange. They moved for the last time with IBM in 1976 to Austin, Texas. Jim was with IBM until 1983 when he left for a start up called N.A.I. and in 1984 he joined BMC Software. Jim was responsible for managing the first BMC Austin office and establishing worldwide offices in London, Milan, Paris and Frankfurt. Jim retired from BMC Software in December of 1989.
Jim and Candace Nance were married in March of 1990 and had a son Edward.
Jim and Candace spent many years volunteering in their community and in the schools that Edward attended. Jim founded the Spicewood Springs Elementary School computer club spending countless hours building computers and teaching students. They also gave time to their local library, and Edwards Boy Scout Troop.
Jim was preceded in Death by his parents, Brother Eddy, Wife Judy and Wife Candace.
Jim is survived by his daughter & son in law Martha & Jay Johnson, son Edward Hastings Gilbert, brother & his wife Richard & Mary Gilbert, their children Rick & Jennifer and mother in law Ramona Nance.
