

James Creighton Wells, 80, of Austin, Texas transitioned to his heavenly home, Tuesday, October 28, 2025. He was born March 13, 1945 in Port Arthur, Texas to Clara Lois Creighton and John Mayo Wells, Sr. Jim was a sixth-generation Texan; Descendant of San Jacinto; Descendant of Signers Texas Declaration of Independence. Jim graduated Bishop Byrne in 1963; was named in Outstanding Young Men of America in 1979, based on his community service; years later, 1988, graduated Cum Laude from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas.
Jim was hard working, focused and dedicated to whatever mission or task at hand. Jim began his career with Southern Union Gas in 1975 as Maintenance & Construction Foreman and retired 37 years later as Vice President of Risk & Loss Control. Jim enjoyed a stellar reputation due to his attention to detail, accomplishing difficult task, ethics and integrity. Jim and his beloved wife, Freddie were members of Central Christian Church in Austin. Jim was Past Master of Texana #123 Masonic Lodge; Member of Onion Creek #220; 32 Degree KCCH of the Scottish Rite; Shriners; York Rite; OES Travis Chapter#472 and was a member & supporter of various other Masonic Lodges. Jim was a long time member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas.
Jim was passionate about any pursuit. He was an avid Hunter, fisherman, golfer and motorcyclist. Jim, as in everything he did, excelled in all his hobbies. His conquest included a 10-pt Buck; 8.5 lb Bass; a hole-in-one and the thrill of playing “The Old Course” in Scotland. Jim was eligible for the Iron Butt award on his Harley ride from Austin to Milwaukee for the 105th Harley Anniversary. Jim loved flowers, cactus, hot air balloons, Shiner Bach, Grey Goose Martinis, country-western dancing, collecting pottery & jewelry of Native American Artist and genealogy, where he discovered his roots. Jim was well known for his attention to detail; his well-coiffed hair and his gentlemanly manners. He loved his family who was always a source of pride & joy.
Jim was predeceased by his dearly, beloved brothers, Johnny & Tommy Wells; a granddaughter, Rebekah McKissack and his parents.
Survivors are his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Freddie Wells of Austin; his son, Troy James Wells & Barbara; daughter Tammy McKissack & John; step-daughter, Rachal Kidder & Murphy. Eight grandchildren: Carol Hebert; Virgie Clark; Justin Norris; Christina LeBlanc; Robert James Wells; Allison Wells; Lauren Coons; Bailey Foley. Fifteen great-grandchildren; Sister-in-laws Sue Coburn, Karen & Peggy Wells; nieces and nephews. Jim, affectionately known as Grandfather, will be sorely missed by all our families, dear cousins and a host of friends.
Visitation is November 7 at Cook-Walden, 5-8 pm; A Christian service will be held on Nov 8, at 10:00 AM; Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas. Burial 4:00 PM in Muse Cemetery, 275 County Road 1219, Grapeland, Texas. (9 miles east of Slocum on Hwy 294 (toward Alto) then 1/2 mile north of Hwy 294 on FM228.
